Tutor Profile: Emma Brown – Scratch Coding for Kids
Hello! I'm Emma Brown, and I've devoted the last two years to teaching children the wonderful world of coding through the Scratch platform here in Scotland, SD. My passion is to make learning an adventure – especially when it comes to coding. By integrating fun and interactive elements into my lessons, I've had the pleasure of watching my students' eyes light up as they bring their wildest imaginations to life with coding.
I believe that learning to code at a young age sets kids up for success by instilling problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and creativity. My aim is to provide a friendly, engaging environment where kids can confidently take their first steps into the world of technology and continue to grow and advance their skills.
Background:
As a child, I was fascinated with computers and games, and that passion never faded. I pursued a degree in computer science, where I specialized in educational technologies. After graduating, I tailored my career towards teaching coding to children. Over the past two years, I have honed my skills as a tutor, dedicating myself to making coding accessible and enjoyable for children of all ages and skill levels.
Expertise:
My expertise lies in teaching Scratch, an intuitive and child-friendly programming language. I excel in:
Crafting beginner-friendly lessons for new coders.
Developing intermediate and advanced projects for seasoned young coders.
Creating engaging coding games that teach fundamental principles in a playful manner.
Personalizing coding experiences to match each child's interests and learning pace.
Ensuring a solid foundation in coding logic that can be transferred to other programming languages.
Q: What is Scratch, and why is it good for kids?
A: Scratch is a visual programming language and online community where kids can create their own interactive stories, games, and animations. It's specifically designed to help young learners think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. I use Scratch because it's an excellent starting point for kids to learn coding in a supportive and engaging way.
Q: What age groups do you teach?
A: I primarily teach children aged 7 to 14 years. Scratch is friendly enough for younger learners while still offering sufficient depth for older kids to challenge themselves.
Q: Can my child take lessons if they've never coded before?
A: Absolutely! I specialize in introducing beginners to the world of coding. I'll help your child start from scratch (no pun intended!) and build their confidence and skills step by step.
Q: How do you measure a student's progress?
A: I measure progress through achievable projects and milestones, regular review sessions, and most importantly, by the enthusiasm and creativity the students show as they learn and build.
